Retouching is not the same as smoothing
Basic smoothing treats texture as a problem. High-end beauty retouching separates temporary distractions from permanent human detail. Blemishes, uneven patches and distracting highlights can be refined while pores, expression and facial structure remain present.
The goal is not to make skin uniformly perfect. It is to make the lighting, make-up and expression easier to read. Good work should hold up in a close crop and still feel convincing at normal viewing distance.

When a high-end workflow is worth it
The process is most valuable for close-up advertising, beauty editorials, cosmetics campaigns and portraits that will be printed or displayed at large scale. These uses reveal shortcuts quickly.
Before production begins, define the final usage, number of images, required consistency and level of finish. A clear reference frame makes the rest of the series faster and more predictable.
